Bitcoin Price Analysis: Why BTC Holding Up Despite Fed Rate Hike

- Bitcoin (BTC) is showing resilience, holding key support levels despite heavy selling pressure.
- US spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded about $296 million in net outflows on September 15 and another $450 million on September 16.
- The Federal Reserve raised its benchmark rate by 25 basis points to 3.75%-4.00% on September 16, signalling another rate hike.
- Around $6.28 billion worth of IBIT options are set to expire today, September 18, creating volatility.
Why Is Bitcoin Holding Strong Amidst Bearish Signals?
Bitcoin is facing several headwinds at the same time: tighter US monetary policy, large ETF outflows, and a major options expiry.
Normally, higher interest rates can pressure riskier assets because investors have less incentive to take on risk. Yet BTC has so far remained above important support levels.
That does not necessarily mean the bearish risks have disappeared. Instead, the current price action suggests that buyers are still absorbing some of the selling pressure.
Fed Rate Hike Adds Pressure
On September 16, the Federal Reserve raised its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points to 3.75%-4.00%, marking its first rate increase since 2023.
The updated projections also pointed to the possibility of another hike in 2026. Reuters reported that 16 of 18 Fed policymakers expected at least one more increase this year.
President Trump said on Truth Social,
“Interest Rates in the United States should be 1%, or less, because we are the Best Credit in the World.”
For Bitcoin, this matters because higher rates can support the US dollar and Treasury yields while reducing liquidity available for riskier assets. So far, however, BTC has avoided a deeper breakdown.
Bitcoin ETF Outflows Raise Questions
The resilience becomes more interesting when you consider ETF flows.
US spot Bitcoin ETFs saw roughly $296 million in net outflows on September 15, followed by around $450 million on September 16. That brings the combined two-day outflow to about $746 million.
Large ETF outflows can indicate reduced institutional demand, but they should not be treated as a standalone signal for Bitcoin's next move. ETF flows can change quickly as investors adjust positions around major macroeconomic events.
Research Analyst of Bitget Wallet, Lacie Zhang said,
“The failed Clarity vote was a meaningful crypto-specific catalyst, but it was not the sole driver of the selloff,”
$6.28 Billion IBIT Options Expiry Adds Volatility Risk
Another major event is the expiry of approximately 1.47 million IBIT options contracts on September 18, representing around $6.28 billion in underlying value.
A large options expiry can create additional short-term volatility as traders and market makers adjust their hedges and positions.
However, a significant portion of open interest is reportedly concentrated around IBIT strikes corresponding to Bitcoin prices between roughly $70,900 and $79,700.
This does not mean this crypto coin will move toward any specific strike. It simply means price action around these levels could become more sensitive as positions are closed or rolled over.
Bitcoin Technical Levels to Watch
BTC is currently caught between bullish resilience and bearish macro pressure.
The $76,000 area remains an important support zone, while the $77,800-$78,500 region represents the first major resistance area. Bitcoin's ability to hold above support is important. A sustained break below $76,000 could put the lower support levels back in focus.
On the other hand, reclaiming $77,800-$78,000 and then pushing through $78,500 would put the higher resistance zone back into focus.
Resistance: $77,800, $78,500, $79,000-$79,600
Support: $76,000-$76,700, $75,000, $71,300
What Should Traders Do Now?
Rather than focusing on one signal, traders should watch how Bitcoin reacts to the combination of price levels, ETF flows and macroeconomic events.
- Watch $76,000: Holding this area would keep the current consolidation structure intact. A clear break below it could increase downside pressure.
- Watch $77,800-$78,500: A sustained move above this zone could show that buyers are regaining short-term control.
- Track ETF flows: A return to consistent net inflows would suggest improving demand from spot Bitcoin ETF investors.
- Prepare for options-related volatility: The large IBIT expiry could lead to sharper price swings as market participants adjust their positions.
- High Impact NEWS Alert: September 18's Industrial Production and Leading Indicators releases could influence broader risk sentiment, although their impact on BTC may be smaller than the Fed's policy outlook and the options expiry.
