Oil Price Surges as Middle East Attack Continues
Summary
  • Brent crude climbed to $107.51 a barrel, a 2.77% increase
  • New attacks on Saudi Arabia and vessels in the Strait of Hormuz create a crisis on global supply
  • Analysts warn of further price increases, with some forecasting Brent could test $120 if this persists.

Why Are Oil Prices Spiking Amid Geopolitical Turbulence?

The current surge in oil prices is a direct consequence of continuous geopolitical risks in the Middle East, primarily impacting critical supply routes and infrastructure. Traders are pricing in a significant "geopolitical risk premium" as the stability of global energy flows comes under renewed threat.

Renewed Attacks Fuel Supply Fears

Fresh attacks have targeted Saudi Arabia and commercial vessels operating in the Strait of Hormuz. Saudi state media reported damage to homes and a mosque in the Jazan province following a Houthi attack on Sunday, September 13, 2026.

Simultaneously, a vessel in the Strait of Hormuz was struck by a projectile, forcing its crew to evacuate, as reported by the British maritime security agency UKMTO.

These incidents directly threaten the security of oil transportation in one of the world's most vital maritime choke points, through which nearly a fifth of the world's oil and gas flows.

Key Saudi Pipeline Shutdown Brings Concerns

Further intensifying supply concerns, Saudi Arabia's crucial East-West oil pipeline was shut down last week following a drone strike originating from Iraq. This pipeline is critical as it allows Saudi Arabia, the world's largest oil exporter, to reroute shipments and bypass the Strait of Hormuz. Its closure threatens up to 4% of global oil supply, significantly reducing flexibility in the face of regional disruptions.

As of 23:13 GMT on Monday, September 14, 2026, Brent crude futures rose $2.90, or 2.77%, to $107.51 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude gained $2.27, or 2.27%, to $102.32 a barrel.

Postponement of Diplomacy Adds Uncertainty

Efforts to de-escalate tensions in the region have also faced setbacks. Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi announced on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, September 13, 2026, that a scheduled meeting between Gulf countries and Iran to discuss the Strait of Hormuz had been postponed. This delay in diplomatic engagement further exacerbates market uncertainty, leaving traders with little immediate hope for a quick resolution to the supply risks.

IG market analyst Tony Sycamore noted on Sunday, September 13, 2026,

"Unless this week's talks in Oman produce something operational or the East-West pipeline is brought back online quickly, the risk is that crude oil continues to extend its gains toward the $119.48 high of early March."

Analysts Revise Price Forecasts Upward

The sustained geopolitical risk has prompted analysts to revise their oil price forecasts higher. HSBC Senior Global Oil and Gas Analyst Kim Fustier and her team recently raised their 2026 Brent price forecast by $10 per barrel, now expecting it to average $90 per barrel for the year, up from $80 previously.

They also increased their 2027 forecast to $85 per barrel from $65, highlighting a market adjusting to a "disrupted 'new normal'" where the Strait of Hormuz remains persistently impaired.

Technical Indicators

WTI crude oil is currently in a strong bullish trend, with prices trading significantly above key moving averages. The immediate focus for traders will be on whether the current momentum can sustain breaches of recent highs.

Resistance: 103.675, 107.049 109.637

Support: 97.713, 95.125, 91.751

What Should Traders Do Now?

  • Monitor Geopolitical Developments: Keep a close watch on news from the Middle East, particularly any reports regarding further attacks, diplomatic progress, or the status of the Saudi East-West pipeline. Any de-escalation could lead to a swift downside correction.
  • Consider Volatility: Given the high-impact nature of the current drivers, expect increased price volatility. Implement robust risk management strategies, such as setting stop-loss orders, to protect capital.
  • Warning: high-impact event ahead: US Retail Sales data is scheduled for Wednesday, September 16, 2026. The previous value for July 2026 was -0.6%, following +0.2% in June 2026. Also, the Federal Reserve's interest rate decision is scheduled for Wednesday, September 16, 2026. These events could introduce significant volatility across global markets, including commodities like oil.
