BTC/USD 45-minute chart for October 29 to 30, 2026 (US Eastern Time). It shows a liquidity sweep at $81,888, a break below $78,200 after the Binance hack, and price retesting the $78,080 to $78,555 fair value gap. Support sits at the $76,100 to $76,420 order block.
Summary
  • Bitcoin (BTC) dropped below $78,000, reaching an intraday low near $76,320.
  • A major Binance security hack incident, with an estimated impact of $6.3 billion, has shaken the crypto market.
  • Approximately 135,159 Bitcoin options contracts worth $10.9 billion are expiring today.
  • Hawkish Federal Reserve expectations and changing institutional demand are adding pressure to digital assets.

Why is The Crypto Market Going Down Now?

The cryptocurrency market is facing complete selling pressure as the security breach issue, along with the macro environment, creates volatility. Investors and other fund managers are more concerned now.

Binance Security Incident Shakes the Market

A security breach incident involving Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, has emerged as a major catalyst behind the latest Bitcoin price drop.

Late on October 29 (US Eastern Time), Binance reported that its investigation identified a potentially compromised DevOps engineer's laptop, which allowed an attacker to submit unauthorized withdrawal transactions.

According to the Washington Post, the exchange estimated the incident's total impact at approximately $6.3 billion, although around $3 billion in affected assets had been frozen on-chain. Tether and Circle also froze related USDT and USDC assets.

Binance stated that user funds remained safe and that it would cover the losses through its SAFU fund and company funds. Paolo Ardoino, CEO of Tether,  said,

"Protecting the industry and our partners is our main priority."

According to a Union-Bulletin report, a Binance spokesperson said,

“Rest assured that user funds are completely safe. Our security teams are reviewing all relevant information with urgency, and we will provide updates through official Binance channels as soon as we have verified information.”

Nevertheless, the incident has renewed concerns about centralized exchange security, encouraging some investors to reduce their cryptocurrency exposure.

$10.9 Billion Bitcoin Options Expiry Puts $78,000 in Focus

Another important factor behind today's market uncertainty is the expiry of approximately 135,159 Bitcoin options contracts on Deribit, representing an estimated $10.9 billion in notional value. The settlement is scheduled for October 30 at 4:00 AM ET.

Options give traders the right, but not the obligation, to buy or sell an asset at a predetermined price. Large expiries can increase short-term volatility as traders and market makers adjust their positions.

The estimated max pain level is around $78,000. This represents the price at which the combined payout to option holders would be minimized.

However, max pain is not a guaranteed price target. With BTC now trading right around this level, traders are watching whether buyers can reclaim $78,000 following settlement or whether further selling will emerge.

Hawkish Fed Expectations Weigh on Risk Appetite

Macroeconomic uncertainty is adding another layer of pressure to Bitcoin and other speculative assets.

On October 28, the Federal Reserve maintained interest rates at 3.75%–4%, with two policymakers dissenting in favor of an immediate rate increase.

The decision reinforced concerns that monetary conditions could remain restrictive for longer. Higher interest rates can make traditional yield-bearing investments more attractive than non-yielding assets such as Bitcoin, potentially reducing speculative demand.

Elevated Treasury yields and uncertainty surrounding future Fed decisions could therefore limit Bitcoin's recovery attempts.

Institutional ETF Demand Remains in Focus

Institutional investment flows are another important factor influencing Bitcoin's direction.

US spot Bitcoin ETFs have become a significant source of market demand. However, changing investor sentiment and macroeconomic uncertainty can lead to fluctuating inflows and outflows.

If institutional buying weakens while broader market uncertainty persists, Bitcoin could face additional difficulty recovering its recent losses.

Technical Indicators

Resistance: $78,080–$78,555 (FVG), $78,700–$79,100, $80,300–$80,900 (order block)

Support: $76,100–$76,420 (order block), $75,000

If sellers defend the FVG, BTC could slide about 2.25% back toward the $76,100–$76,420 order block. A 45-minute close above $79,100 would weaken this bearish setup and open the way toward the order block. Traders can also watch RSI for oversold readings, but these alone do not confirm a reversal.

The 45-minute chart below shows a clear shift from bullish to bearish structure over the past 24 hours.

On October 29, BTC pushed to a session high near $81,888 around 11:45 AM ET. This move swept the buy-side liquidity resting above earlier highs, but buyers could not hold the gains.

Sellers then stepped in from the $80,300–$80,900 order block. Around 4:15 PM ET, a sharp drop broke below the $79,600 swing low. This marked a change of character (CHoCH), which means the short-term trend flipped from up to down.

The selloff then created a break of structure (BoS) below $78,200 and dragged BTC to an intraday low near $76,320 at about 9:30 PM ET.

Long lower wicks between $76,400 and $76,730 now form a wick block. Just below it sits a bullish order block at $76,100–$76,420, built around the $76,320 low where buyers first stepped in. Together, these zones show buyers are defending this area, at least for now.

At 12:55 AM ET on October 30, BTC traded near $78,090, back inside a bearish fair value gap (FVG) at $78,080–$78,555. The sharp 7:45 PM ET drop left this gap, and it sits just above the $78,000 max pain level. Price is still below the 20 EMA ($78,648) and the 50 EMA ($79,522), which keeps the short-term bias bearish.

What Should Traders Watch Next?

  • Upside Scenario: A close above the $78,555 FVG could support a recovery toward $78,700–$79,100, then the $80,300 order block, particularly if buying volume improves.
  • Downside Scenario: A sustained break below the $76,100 order block could expose the next psychological support near $75,000.
  • Options Expiry: Watch price action around the $78,000 max pain level following the 4:00 AM ET settlement.
  • Binance Investigation: Further security updates and asset recovery developments could influence investor confidence.
  • US Economic Data: The Employment Cost Index for Q3 is scheduled for October 30 at 8:30 AM ET. Its inflation implications could influence expectations surrounding future Fed policy.
